Are You Diet Obsessed?

Somewhere along the way my first diet or second diet or even after that became my master. I’m not sure when it happened; I just know it did. I became obsessed with dieting. Even to the point that I wasn’t sure I could take communion because it was a carb and I was on a carb-free diet. Help me!

I became obsessed! The god of this age blinded me with a system of diets/weight loss/body image.

Obsession is the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire etc. (Sound familiar?) It’s to think about something unceasingly or persistently; to dominate the thoughts, feelings, or desires. It’s to “haunt persistently or abnormally.” The origin of the word obsess has its roots in to be besieged, occupied, or haunted by evil spirits.

Friends, this is spiritual warfare! And our mighty God is the guaranteed victor!

First, we have to acknowledge that we are diet obsessed–that we have made diets our idol. God alone wants our worship. He’s committed to leading us to freedom from this idol.

Take this quiz to see if you’ve made diets your idol. Ask God to reveal truth to you as you take it. Again, this is a very personal issue between you and God. The Holy Spirit will reveal truth to you.

  • Do you often move from one diet to another?
  • Do you talk about dieting an inordinate amount of time?
  • Do you search for that magic diet that’ll finally work?
  • When someone mentions weight loss, do you automatically ask what she’s doing?
  • When you hear about a diet that’s working, do you research it and consider it?
  • After you’ve researched the above diet, do you then try it?
  • Do you spend a lot of money on weight loss books/programs/apps?
  • When saying no to a food, do you also tell what diet you’re on?
  • Do you know all about the latest diet fads?
  • Have you tried most of the latest diet fads?
  • Do you weigh once or more daily?
  • Do you spiritualize dieting when what you really want is weight loss?
  • Do you worship weight loss, giving your time, money, attention, focus, and heart to it?
  • Is losing weight on your mind most of the time?
  • Is losing weight on your lips most of the time?
  • Do you talk about body image/diet/struggle more than you talk about God?
  • Do your friends and family know what diet you’re currently on?

If we are ever to walk in freedom, we must confess this to God. And we must make worshipping the only true and living God the thing we want more than anything–even weight loss!

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)
